I’m worried about the birds today. I didn’t fill the feeder but they cleaned out a quarter of it this morning, more than the usual eighth, and now they’re picking through the seeds on the ground. The doves and the finches bathed before the rain came in. Coating their feathers and shaking a misty rainbow on their way back to the trees while the mockingbirds and jays stuffed their beaks and bickered. But it’s been raining for hours now and they’ve come back to peck at the ground. Maybe the worms are coming up. Maybe it’s a feast day for starlings and the others got invited and didn’t want to turn them down. Everyone knows starlings can be dicks or they’ll remind you.
