Happy to subscribe if it gets more of your work out in the world. I found you from the anniversary tweet of the cable-guy article. That led me to your book which I treasure. Just keep putting it out there. We need your voice.

Fear of comments is a big part of why I have no desire to aggressively gain followers on Twitter. I kind of freak out when I get a retweet, depending on the subject. LOL And I never, ever do a name search to see if anyone's taken a screenshot of a tweet or reply to mock me. In the beginning of the Trump years, when I probably was still below 500 followers/following, I experienced a minor pile-on for sharing that my mom and I, once extremely close, are now estranged because she thinks joking about killing your political opponents is NBD.* "Cunt, bitch, ungrateful, should have been aborted." The usual. I deleted the reply, locked my account, and changed my @ to make it stop. If I had to be subjected to what I see you go through on Twitter, just to bring in some income, I'd probably be taking a dirt nap. Yeah, unfortunately, I'd let the fuckers get to me. Big part of why I refuse to re-learn how to use a firearm 37 years post army life.

*Many years later (as in, this week), I finally got a response, which consisted of the typical non-apology apology of "I'm sorry a joke I posted offended you so much." Head, meet desk.

I'm scared to keep a journal because my mom used to read my diary when I was a kid. I live in fear of going viral, even though I have so many things I want to say!

Yeah. Whenever something is blowing up on Twitter I tend to keep my thoughts to myself to avoid someone taking offense in case it's not perfectly (in their mind) conveyed. There are some accounts I follow (Celia Bedilia comes to mind) that just have nasty comment on top of nasty comment thrown their way and they just keep throwing it right back at them. My self esteem is too low to deal with those kinds of trolls.

I'm sorry your mom invaded your privacy like that. :(

This was one of the better "paid vs free" explanations I've read. Nicely done. Bookmarked for future reference.

“It’s a mindfuck to say the least... Some days the simple fact of comments gets into my head.”

I feel this so much.

Long time subscriber- first time poster- To be quite honest. I just like to read your shit! The way I relate to you or the way you take us with you in your adventures, The Woodmeister, ect, ect... is all part of the product that you REALLY REALLY do provide. I also feel the people who subscribe to you, know the schtick. I hope you don’t have to explain this anymore. Im sure it’s annoying. And I hope you never change. Because I’ll keep following, wherever and whenever you take us.

P.S. (cash on nightstand)

I pay you and a couple of others here (who post far less than you do but I want to support their work, because good art, whether it’s recipes, photography or words needs to be supported. I adored your book, find your posts interesting, I’m amused by your sunshiny personality that you show us here and, to be honest, I’m completely in love with Woody. So, yeah, take my money.

I find that fear of comments, and fear of discussion, in the sense of what they might do in a negative emotional sense, can be partly more mitigated by: the understanding and spotting of common logical fallacies; and going along with that, a continual pursuit of more deeply understanding the difference between bad faith communication-- which generally includes logical fallacies-- and good faith communication.. both.. to have better ability and less fear of navigating bad faith communication, and trying to grow good faith communication where possible; and lastly, having an ability to civilly accuse someone of bad faith communication and explain why, if you think they are engaging in it (where the use of humor can potentially make bad faith more difficult to discern), in an attempt to offer the chance to reach a sufficiently agreed-upon mutual perception of good faith communication.. before ending the conversation if this can't be reached. My online temperament is flawed because I'm part German but these are rules I try to operate by outside of comedy.
