I’m now that weirdo who gets up before the house is awake. I’m at my aunt’s house in Durango. I’ve always loved my aunt Nancy’s house, though it used to be Lubbock. We’d come back from wherever we were. And we’d go to Aunt Nancy’s, barge through the door to find my cousins in the TV room. They’d catch us up on all we’d missed while overseas—whether it was 90210 or Vanilla Ice or Jeffrey Dahmer. When the adults wanted the tv, she’d cut a watermelon in half, stick a bunch of forks and spoons in it and send us out in the yard. (She’s a genius now that I think about it.)
Next time I have a home, I'm going to strive to make it like Aunt Nancy's. But with an overwhelming number of books, because I have an overwhelming number of books.
Quilts are usually a good delineation for comfy home and hands off home. Worst thing my mam-maw ever did was letting me have a quilt for college. Promptly fell asleep with a cigarette and burned an unfixable huge hole out of it. Still have my intricately decorated, baby quilt. I think we need more quilts in our house. Music, quilts and books. Aunt Nancy's house sounds like the best.
Watch out for la patrulla on HWY 64 from Raton to Textline en route Amarillo. Don't forget to honk when you go through Capulin. Or stop and let dog have a romp here in the shadow of the Capulin volcano national Monument.
You are so lucky to still have family who are alive. See them as often as you can. Tell Aunt Nancy often that you love her. Time passes quickly and those we love are gone sooner than we like. Make and share your memories. You’ll be glad you did.
The world needs a lot more Aunt Nancys in it.
That birch tree quilt is a goddamned work of art. ART, I say!
I'm so happy for Woody that he gets to cinnamon roll on a comfy sofa.
Aunt Nancys are the true meaning of hospitality. To give shelter from the heart.

Wait-- is that art on the wall with the trees... a quilt?? 😮 Wow, Aunt Nancy!

“where kids could be kids and a dog gets to be a dog.” 😀😀😀
❤️ Wasn’t too far from there, Montrose, yesterday, but headed home to Iowa now. I try to be an “aunt Nancy” at my house. Lucky you and Woody.
