I want a whole book of dog stories but since that will be awhile, if ever, thank dog for this substack.

I loved this.

We had a husky when I was a kid. Once he came home with half a cow leg in his mouth. Who knows.

Of the many, many things I loved about this one, I have to say you are fucking hilarious. And yeah, a book of dog stories would be great one day. Thank you for this one.

Love reading Teddy's origin story. He was very handsome! That prey drive would've scared off many. I'm glad he got to live out his wonder years with you. You understood him and covered up his crimes like a true best friend and companion. How we was alone, hunting and living behind the shed in your yard is the real mystery!

I miss Teddy. And anyone who lets their dog run free (or their cat) has murder stories they don't know to tell. Hikers find the bodies. Teddy definitely was in the hundredth murder percentile. Cats kill a shit ton of birds. And you saved that pillow case cat.. But yeah I hope this is paywalled.

Dang. It struck me how much work it must've been to cover for a murderous dog! About the coyote: I was practically cheering. Somebody help me feel compassionate over packs of coyotes who bully and terrify their prey before the kill. It kills me hearing their torturing rituals. Just do the deed FFS! Anyway, I love your writing, it's riveting. I had to laugh while looking every time you said to look at the pics of beautiful Teddy. Yeah I know what you're doing, and it is great.

Wonderful story. Reminded me of the time my dogs left a fully intact rabbit head staring up into the sky, like a mounted hunting trophy. The rest of the rabbit was nowhere to be found.

I think your dogs and my dogs teamed up. Duke was whining to be let out around 2:00 a.m. a couple years ago. (Ya know, sometimes I gotta pee in the middle of the night too, dude, so I feel ya). He came back in a few minutes later and headed back upstairs to the bedroom. I follow him a few minutes after that only to be met at the top of the stairs by an entire rabbit, minus the head, horked up on the floor.

In those few minutes of being outside he managed to find, catch, and eat an entire adult bunny and then promptly purged it. The hubs gets explosive dog diarrhea duty, and I get puke duty. It took me a few minutes to fully understand what exactly I was looking at. I really should have taken a picture; it was quite impressive. LOL

Ahh, whatever it took to write this one out, thanks for the effort, because it took me from my fandom of Woody making me remember fun with my teenage-era dogs, to fond remembrance of Teddy, to real talk about murder pets. There was a rabbit in my yard this week. My cat Coolis killed rabbits so good that rabbits just got back here even though she died in 2009, June 10th 2009. Young bunny strangers from far enough away that they don't even know to avoid her grave?!? What new era is this? Anyway, I cycled around to feeling a lot of love for Woody and his more peaceful ways.

But having the companionship with an ARTFULLY PREDATORY animal stays remarkable forever, I think.

Another great story! Some folks never learn their pets, but you! Oh, you...those boys were/are so loved and taken care of and understood. You are such a good dog mom. It was nice seeing Teddy photos again. Love.

What a complete contrast in dogs. I’m sure there will be many, many more stories to come of Woody and his escapades with Teddy being a completely opposite. Every dog is a wonder and our relationship with each of them so personal. With you going on the road shortly with Woody, I am really looking forward to his stories with another for Woody.

1. Thanks for the Woody and Teddy pictures. 2. When we were young and dumb, we used to let our cats out some of the time. 3. I love seeing chipmunks out in the wild or in the yard. They are very cute. 4. See #2, one of the cats decided to grace us with decapitated chipmunks by the back door frequently.

Thank you for this.

My favorite is your Dust Bowl story, but damn this is very close second.

I love a good dog story. Even when the dog's not good. Perhaps particularly so.
